No doubt you’ll be visiting a tasting room or three while you’re in Sonoma County. Here are some helpful tips. ASK QUESTIONS Have a question? Don’t be shy. Winery hospitality staff are knowledgeable, friendly and happy to answer all of your questions, from why there are different wine glasses for different varietals and what it means for a wine to have “legs.” SPIT If you’ll be visiting more than a few wineries in one day, it’s best to keep your wits about you. Use the buckets on the counter to taste and then spit. It’s very common and appreciated, we promise. LEARN YOUR STYLE There are many styles of wine varietals, such as crisp and minerally Chardonnay versus one that is creamy and buttery. Ask about the different styles of each varietal while you’re tasting to decide which styles you prefer. HAVE FUN Don’t be intimidated. Wine tasting really isn’t meant to be stuffy and serious – enjoy the experience and make it your own! GUESTS SHOULD BE 21 OR OLDER Guests must be 21 to taste wine. If you’ll be bringing children or teens along, check with the wineries you’ll be visiting about any activities available for under-aged guests. USE YOUR TASTING FEE Many wineries charge for tastings and tours, then waive the fees with a purchase. Each one is different; when in doubt, ask. PRACTICE SAFETY FIRST Think ahead about how you will travel between your tasting experiences. Pick a group of wineries or tasting rooms within walking distance of each other or that center around a plaza. If the wineries you will be visiting are further away from each other, consider designating or hiring a driver. TRY SOMETHING NEW 32 Winds Wine Tasting Rooms are often hosting unique experiences and activities you might not expect at a winery such as yoga or crafting. Be open to opportunities to try something new in addition to tasting new varietals. CALL AHEAD Bella Vineyards and Wine Caves Many wineries and tasting rooms accept and appreciate advance reservations or appointments. Consider calling ahead and booking a specific time to give the winery a heads up and ensure you have the best tasting experience. BOOK A TOUR La Crema Winery With more than 425 wineries in Sonoma County, selecting which ones to visit can be overwhelming. Leave the selection to the experts by booking a tour that suits your style. SONOMA COUNTY TASTING PASS Interested in more than just wine? Check out the Sonoma County Tasting Pass for special access to craft breweries, cideries and micro distilleries in addition to award-winning wineries.
