The Black Hills and Badlands region is a biker’s dream, dotted with epic rides surrounded by fantastic scenery. 1 PETER NORBECK SCENIC BYWAY The 70-mile scenic byway in Custer State Park threads its way around pigtail bridges, through one-lane rock-walled tunnels and ascends to the uppermost heights of the Needles. The route is considered one of the most outstanding byways in the U.S. and consists of Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, SD 87 and U.S. 16A. 2 SPEARFISH CANYON SCENIC BYWAY Towering limestone palisades line this scenic byway as it twists through the 19-mile gorge between Spearfish and Lead. Spearfish Creek traces the canyon while Bridal Veil, Spearfish and Roughlock falls are popular roadside attractions. 3 BADLANDS LOOP STATE SCENIC BYWAY Meander through the north unit of Badlands National Park surrounded by towering buttes, dramatic cliffs and striated spires. This 31-mile stretch of highway has numerous passes and scenic overlooks with sweeping views of the Badlands’ jagged formations. Extend your ride by taking Hwy 44 to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. 4 BOULDER CANYON SCENIC RIDE This high-walled valley road provides a short yet sweet 12-mile ride. This relaxing route between Sturgis and Deadwood is incredibly stunning during the fall when it’s bursting with colorful autumn foliage. 5 BELLE FOURCHE TO DEVILS TOWER SCENIC RIDE The 52-mile journey to Devils Tower National Monument takes you through the picturesque Belle Fourche River Valley. After entering Wyoming, you’ll pass through the historical coal mining hub of Aladdin, WY, and climb through ponderosa pine forests. As you approach Hulett, WY, glimpses of the tower emerge from the rocky hills. 6 VANOCKER CANYON AND NEMO ROAD SCENIC RIDE Enjoy the gentle curves of Nemo Road as you follow Box Elder Creek and pass dense pine, abandoned miner cabins and expansive meadows. A mile from the town of Nemo, turn into Vanocker Canyon. The 17-mile leg twists and curves through three breathtaking canyons that give way to an exhilarating downhill plunge.
