I-90 Miles: 392 I-90 between Sioux Falls and Spearfish 1. SIOUX FALLS Exits 395-402 Marvel at picturesque Falls Park, featuring a series of waterfalls with paved pedestrian walkways and overlook points along the way. Experience SculptureWalk™. Showcasing more than 50 sculptures annually, this public art project presents a creative way to tour downtown. Don’t miss the Arc of Dreams, a permanent art installation arching 85 feet above the Big Sioux River. Enjoy a free concert at Levitt at the Falls, an open-air entertainment venue between downtown and Falls Park. 2. MITCHELL Exits 330-332 At Prehistoric Indian Village, watch archaeologists unearth evidence of an early native culture and view samples on display. Join locals at The World’s Only Corn Palace to experience the eccentric folk art or annual Corn Palace Festival in late August. 3. CHAMBERLAIN Exits 263-265 At the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, see the majesty of the Dignity: of Earth & Sky sculpture and board a replica of the duo’s keelboat for unique Missouri River views. If the timing’s right, drive into the sunset. The Chamberlain/Oacoma area is where the West officially begins on this road trip. 4. WALL Exits 109-110 Learn how South Dakota played a key role in U.S. Cold War preparedness at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. Grab homemade doughnuts and a selfie with a giant jackalope at Wall Drug Store. Head south of Wall to explore the breathtaking scenery of Badlands National Park. 5. RAPID CITY Exits 55-61 See what’s happening at Main Street Square. Depending on the season, you might enjoy a concert, festival or ice skating. Explore the City of Presidents, a series of life-size statues of the nation’s leaders found in the bustling downtown area. 6. STURGIS Exits 30-32 In August, 400,000-plus bikers roar into town for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, 10 days of bike shows, races, concerts and group rides on the bucket-list routes for which Sturgis is known. Join the 81st rally August 6–15, 2021. 7. SPEARFISH Exits 10-17 View brown and rainbow trout from the underwater viewing area at D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery & Archives. Stretch your legs exploring waterfall hikes and fishing streams in Spearfish Canyon. DELIGHTFUL DETOURS: 5 SPURS OFF I-90 [1] Between I-90 and Fort Pierre, birdwatch at Fort Pierre National Grassland, home to sharptail grouse, greater prairie chicken and Chinese ring-necked pheasant. [2] Follow Highway 34 west of Pierre to see fields of sunflowers in bloom between late July and late August. Loop back to I-90 by heading south on South Dakota Highway 63. [3] Marvel at colorful hills, buttes and spires along the 39-mile Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway between Cactus Flat and Wall. [4] Just northeast of Sturgis at Bear Butte State Park, stretch your legs with a hike to the summit of sacred Mato Paha ("Bear Mountain") or around Bear Butte Lake.
