From how you celebrate to how you get around town, there are several ways to be a sustainable traveler in New Orleans.
REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE AT MARDI GRAS
The Recycle Dat! initiative successfully diverted 61,219 pounds of recyclable materials from landfills during the 2026 Carnival season. This total includes 6,142 pounds of aluminum (roughly 197,000 cans), 1,691 pounds of plastic (roughly 76,000 bottles), 34,741 pounds of glass (roughly 46,000 bottles), and 18,646 pounds of Mardi Gras beads and throws.
ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION
New Orleans is a walkable city, and there’s no better way to take it all in than on foot. But if you’d prefer wheels, the city’s flat geography lends itself to the easiest biking around. Park the car and take pedal-assisted Blue Bikes or hop on a streetcar, bus, or ferry for a low fare.
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
New Orleans has implemented lots of green infrastructure in recent years, and it blends in so well that you might not even notice! Rain gardens, detention basins, and infiltration trenches are just some of the rainwater mitigation efforts in place. Take a look around and you’ll see lots of new trees, too.
