Internally, DDC’s new sustainability policy has three guiding pillars: people, purpose and place. DDC supports the Joint Meetings Industry Council’s Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge. It will assist with a roadmap for the events industry to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. DDC supports corporate social responsibility and facilitates ways for groups to reduce their carbon footprint or learn about group volunteering and legacy projects that give back to the local community. MINIMIZE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT DC was the first city in North America to launch a bikeshare system, which now has more than 5,000 bikes. Capital Bikeshare is one of the most popular ways to commute and it’s easy with 600+ stations. More than 1,500 buses operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) run on alternative fuel that is less harmful to the environment, including compressed natural gas, advanced technology diesel fuel and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.
