Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown represent three key chapters of America’s early history. Explore each one to trace the path to America’s momentous founding.

The Settlement
HISTORIC JAMESTOWNE

Established in 1607, Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in North America. Stroll the James Fort site, where a statue of Captain John Smith stands sentinel over the James River. Then step inside the Memorial Church, peer into archaeological dig sites, and see artifacts uncovered here in the award-winning Archaearium.

THE POWHATAN WAY OF LIFE
Jamestown was built in the territory of the Paspahegh tribe, part of the Powhatan chiefdom. In Paspahegh Town at Jamestown Settlement, explore a re-created indigenous village to learn how they hunted, crafted dugout canoes, made pottery, and navigated daily life.

SAILING INTO HISTORY
At Jamestown Settlement, step aboard life-sized replicas of the ships that carried the first colonists across the Atlantic. Learn about the 4.5-month voyage, then see the 17th-century come alive across the museum’s outdoor living history areas and indoor galleries.

SEAT OF POWER
Williamsburg was capital of the Virginia Colony from 1699 to 1776. Tour the stately Governor’s Palace, home to seven British royal governors and countless notable guests, including George Washington. Down the street, explore the former Capitol and Courthouse.
