Spearfish Canyon has it all — rugged limestone cliffs, sparkling Spearfish Creek, a rich landscape dominated by pine, spruce, aspen and birch trees, and three stunning waterfalls. Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is a year-round destination known for some of the most spectacular views and outdoor recreation in the Black Hills. The byway runs from Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing, a historic stage stop about 8 miles southwest of Lead. WATERFALLS Bridal Veil Falls cascades over the canyon walls approximately 60 feet. The best time to view it is in the spring when it’s flowing with snowmelt. Take pictures from the observation deck. At Spearfish Canyon State Nature Area, you’ll find Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls. Take the one-mile walkway for easy access to Roughlock Falls, a spectacular natural landmark. Spearfish Falls is slightly off the beaten path. The short trail begins on the north side of Latchstring Inn Restaurant. Take the trail to the bottom of the canyon to view the roaring waterfall. TRAILS Explore Spearfish Canyon on the many popular trails. Hiker’s favorites include 76 Trail, Eleventh Hour Gulch Trail and Iron Creek Trail.
