SLOWLY SAVOR THE TWISTS AND TURNS Towering limestone cliffs and the rushing mountain stream flowing along the 19-mile stretch of U.S. Hwy 14A, known as Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, is unparalleled to anywhere else in the country. Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is a year-round destination known for its spectacular views. Journeys through the canyon were initially made along a rugged trail that followed a railroad track abandoned by the Burlington Railroad. By 1950, the trail was transformed into a paved roadway. Experience a historic stay in the canyon by planning a night or two in a log cabin at either Rim Rock Lodge, one of the oldest resorts in the Northern Black Hills, or Wickiup Village Cabins, situated on the banks of Spearfish C eek. How to Get There To start at the northern end of the byway, take either Exit 10 or Exit 14 off of I-90 to Spearfish and hop on Hwy 14A. To find the southern end, take Hwy 85 east from Wyoming or west from Lead/Deadwood. When you come to the Cheyenne Crossing junction, head north on Hwy 14A and let your scenic cruise begin.
