Snow-dusted winter wonderlands, sun-drenched sunflower fields, brilliant fall colors — each season creates its own kind of magic.

SPRING
South Dakota bursts to life thanks to mild temperatures and renewing rain. With wobbly legs and cinnamon-colored fur, bison calves take their first steps in Custer State Park. The purple petals of the pasque, South Dakota’s state flower, begin to unfold, while anglers flock to the Missouri River for the opening of fishing season.

FALL
Autumn’s chill sets in gradually, with fishing and camping continuing well into September. True fall begins when pheasant season does—the opening day in mid-October is an unofficial state holiday. It’s also prime time for leaf-peeping in Spearfish Canyon and watching Sica Hollow State Park transform into a kaleidoscope of maroon, burnt orange and gold.

SUMMER
Balmy daytime highs melt into cool nights—perfect for long days on the water. Paddle the Big Sioux River on the Jay Heath Canoe & Kayak Trail or enjoy a leisurely pontoon ride across Lake Kampeska. Bicyclists can follow the rolling hills of the Lake Oahe West Shore Bike Trails or pedal through rugged canyons and towering pines on the George S. Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills.

WINTER
Snowflakes start to fall across South Dakota’s vast landscapes in October. Race through Black Hills National Forest and the Coteau des Prairies by snowmobile, or zip down the slopes at Great Bear Ski Valley and Terry Peak Ski Area. Warm up indoors at Sioux Falls’ Washington Pavilion, the Children’s Museum in Brookings or The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs.
