KEARNEY WATER TRAIL

Follow the trails — this region is full of them. Just be sure to look up for the iconic Archway and, in spring, the sandhill crane migration.

With two splashgrounds, paddle boat, paddle board and kayak rentals and fishing piers, Yanney Heritage Park in Kearney offers outdoor fun for all ages. In Red Cloud, take the “Country Tour” from the National Willa Cather Center to learn more about the author’s life and writings. Fonner Park in Grand Island hosts events year-round, including thoroughbred racing from mid-February to early May and the Nebraska State Fair each August. Plus, a brand-new casino and hotel are expected to open in 2025.

WHERE TO STAY Overnight in an early- 20th-century mansion at Cambridge Bed & Breakfast in Cambridge. Stay in a room that belonged to Willa Cather or the rooms of her parents and siblings at the Cather Second Home Guest House. With an indoor water park, the Crowne Plaza Kearney is perfect for families.

WHERE TO EAT Spicy mac, steaks and a vast wine selection? Yes, please! Fill up at The Alley Rose in Kearney. Stop by Shirley K’s in Cambridge, a favorite for coffee and sandwiches. Get your sweet tooth fix with a yummy cookie from Eileen’s Colossal Cookies. Now found in nine states, this favorite cookie chain started right here in Hastings, Nebraska.
