Tour Eagle Butte Mine in the coal-rich Powder River Basin. Or take the self-guided Wildlife Loop Tour to explore Campbell County’s natural history and see antelope and mule deer. THE OCCIDENTAL HOTEL & SALOON BUFFALO Buffalo was a popular stomping ground for the West’s most famous characters, and their spirits live on in the lovingly restored establishment, which combines authenticity with modern comforts. Past guests include Teddy Roosevelt, Calamity Jane and Ernest Hemingway. THE WYO THEATER SHERIDAN The WYO was one of the first vaudeville theaters in Wyoming (it opened in 1923) and is now the oldest in operation, bringing professional music, dance and theater to historic Sheridan. Pair a show with supper at a classic eatery on Main Street like Wyoming’s Rib & Chop House, Frackelton’s or Cowboy Café. WASHAKIE MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER WORLAND The past comes to life at this impressive interpretive center, which portrays the relationship between the historical people of the Bighorn Basin, from ancient mammoth hunters to early settlers, and their environment. Browse exhibits on the area’s human history, geology, archaeology and paleontology. HEART MOUNTAIN INTERPRETIVE CENTER NEAR CODY & POWELL More than 14,000 incarcerees passed through Heart Mountain War Relocation Center, an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. Interactive exhibits, photographs and artifacts allow visitors to experience life at Heart Mountain through the eyes of its former residents and highlight broader issues of racial and social justice in the U.S. BUFFALO BILL CENTER OF THE WEST CODY Drink in the history, art and natural science of the region at this impressive five-museum complex, which includes the Plains Indian, Buffalo Bill, Draper Natural History, Whitney Western Art and Cody Firearms museums. Then take a trolley tour of Cody — “Buffalo Bill’s Town.” WY AM I HERE? Before Cole Smith started Ten Sleep Brewing Company with his family, he worked as a developer and contractor, and before that — he was a cowboy. “I came to this area 40 years ago and took a job as a ranch hand and cowboy on a giant ranch about 45 miles south of Ten Sleep,” he says. “Shortly after that I bought a ranch and operated it with my family for about eight years. During the following years I worked off and on as a cowboy and recently as a horse packer for the fishing and hunting camps in the Bighorns.” STATE PARKS KEYHOLE STATE PARK Located on the cusp of the Black Hills in Moorcroft, Keyhole has activities to keep you busy year-round, including birding (the park has 255 species), boating, hiking and snowmobiling. BUFFALO BILL STATE PARK Encircled by stunning views of the Absaroka Mountains, this park near Cody offers excellent camping and mountain biking. The reservoir’s calm waters attract trout fisherman and wind surfers.
