Paddle boarding is an enjoyable outdoor activity that has really gained traction along the Missouri River within the last six years. It is an enjoyable and affordable way to enjoy the river. Paddle boarding can be done by anyone: kids, adults, friends, parents, grandparents, etc. Paddle boarding can be whatever you’d like it to be- a high intensity workout (think burpees, mountain climbers, push-ups, and paddling), or a relaxing day out on the water. There are even people who are using their paddle boards as glorified loungers. Paddle boarding is a low impact way to get some exercise and find some calming stress relief by enjoying our beautiful Missouri River. There is a misconception that you have to stand (from the name stand-up paddle board (SUP)). You can sit, kneel, or stand or any variation in between. Compared to six years ago, driving around the Missouri River, it is now a normal occurrence to see boards out on the water, on the beaches, and in our State Parks. How beautiful are all of the colors out on the water when there is a group paddle boarding. The benefits of paddle boarding are amazing. Using a paddleboard in any form whether sitting, kneeling, standing provides a low impact full body workout. Your body is working to stabilize itself and balance. Paddle boarding is a natural core workout but the low impact nature of paddle boarding does not leave your bones and joints achy and you don’t feel like you are working out! Paddling on a paddleboard you use your full body, not just your arms. While paddling, you are improving your balance. Paddle boarding is also a great stress relief. Water (the river) naturally soothes the body and mind. Being on the river, especially on a very calm day, exponentially increases that benefit. Paddle boarding allows you to connect with nature! It could be that you witness a fish jump or you watch some birds flying near by. Maybe there is a creature on the riverbank. Paddle boarding on our beautiful Missouri River and in our fabulous State Parks provide us a great opportunity to get out on the water and experience nature.
