A guided tour of cool communities with the innkeepers who know them best North Conway, New Hampshire Make this neck of the woods your mountain paradise Tucked in the foothills of the White Mountains, North Conway bursts with natural beauty that beckons visitors to explore. “Around every turn in the road are rock ledges, rivers, and views of the White Mountains,” say local innkeepers Donna-Marie and Doug Wheaton of the Buttonwood Inn on Mount Surprise. Their peaceful, 10-room inn is just steps away from a hidden-gem hike up Mount Surprise! “Within 15 minutes you’ll have a breathtaking view of North Conway Village,” say the Wheatons. Make time to tackle even more hikes in the area, including the Sabbaday Falls Trail and the Cathedral Ledge from Echo Lake Trail. Or hitch a ride and explore the mountains by train on the Cog Railway. Fun is for all seasons in North Conway, including fishing, tubing, canoeing, skiing, and so much more. The amazing attractions and stunning landscapes continue as you venture down the road to Hart’s Location, the smallest town in New Hampshire. Ed Butler, owner of the Notchland Inn, recommends visiting the two refreshing swimming holes in the Saco River. As he says, “it’s a wonderful way to while away a summer afternoon.” And once you’ve wrapped up your day on the river, make your way to the Notchland Inn for a four-course dinner and a quiet place to rest. Go a couple miles further and you’ll reach the town of Livermore. There, you’ll find the stunning Arethusa Falls, the tallest waterfall in New Hampshire. While you do have to tackle a moderate 2.6-mile hike to get there, the 110-foot cascade is definitely worth the effort. Where To Stay Near North Conway Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Pop by The Grey for some seasonal Savannah-inspired fare or visit The Olde Pink House for mouthwatering fried chicken–and maybe a ghost sighting! For a glamorous night on the town, don’t miss Mata Hari, one of Savannah’s only private speakeasies. A password is required, but if you can manage to speak the magic words, you won’t regret it. The prohibition-inspired cocktails and swanky decor are just the beginning. “It’s super beautiful inside,” says Teagan Hadler, assistant manager of the Azalea Inn and Villas. Opt outside with a trip to Skidway Island State Park, an under-the-radar recommendation from Patty Homer, co-owner of the Inn on West Liberty. The park “is a wonderful getaway to explore the quieter side of Savannah with several miles of hiking and biking trails through shaded woods and marshland,” says Homer. Once back in town, reserve a room at the luxurious Inn on West Liberty for an uninterrupted night of rest and an incredible breakfast the next morning. As Bobbi and Jeff Noe from the Welsh Hills Inn say, “We have lived and worked in the Granville community for 35 years and have never grown tired of it. The people are friendly, intelligent, creative, kind-hearted, and philanthropic.” In typical Granville fashion, Bobbi and Jeff warmly welcome visitors to Welsh Hills Inn’s inviting rooms and gourmet meals every single day.
