Shreveport’s motto is “A Great Place to Call Home.” Joined at the Red River by Bossier City, it is an awesome introduction to everything that’s attractive about the region. Here, you’ll find family-friendly attractions, performances by chart-topping acts, casinos, shopping and events galore. And that’s just inside the city limits. Throughout the region are scenic state parks, historic sites, wildlife tours and some of the best soul food in the world in cities and towns such as Monroe, Ruston and Minden. North Louisiana is incredibly diverse, and yet all the cities, attractions and, most importantly, local residents share one thing in common: Southern hospitality at its most sincere. Monroe-Ruston Area The TV show “Duck Dynasty” introduced the world to northeast Louisiana’s characters and landscapes. In fact, you can see some sights from the show in person, beginning at Duck Commander: The Tour in West Monroe. The town personifies old-time Southern life, with an Antique Alley in the Cottonport Historic District. Across the Ouachita River is downtown Monroe, where you’ll find restaurants such as Cotton and Big Momma’s Fine Foods. Other Monroe area attractions include Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Landry Vineyards. East of Monroe are rural attractions worth seeking out, such as the Southern Heritage Air Foundation Museum in Richmond and Lake Bruin State Park in St. Joseph. Ruston is a slice of Louisiana charm, famous for its peaches. Pick up some at Mitcham Farms Peach Store. Get to know downtown Ruston via its 21-block historic district, and peek into the military past at the artifact-filled North Louisiana Military Museum. Shreveport-Bossier City Area Shreveport and neighboring Bossier City are abuzz with activities. Something’s always brewing in the taprooms at Great Raft Brewing, Flying Heart Brewing and Red River Brewpub, and you just might get lucky at one of the region’s casinos—there are plenty of them, including Boomtown Casino & Hotel, Eldorado Resort Casino and the home to the Super Derby, Harrah’s Louisiana Downs. If you’re looking to pack up the family for a nice trip, look no further for family-friendly activities. See what’s in bloom at the American Rose Center, dive into history at the Shreveport Water Works Museum and peek into the past at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum. All-ages attractions in the surrounding area include Gators & Friends Alligator Park & Exotic Zoo in Greenwood.
