See the sights throughout the state with the most unexpected transit options, from inclines and trolleys to bike shares and beyond. PRACTICAL TRANSIT In Philadelphia, the Philly Phlash connects you to the city’s best sites, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Eastern State Penitentiary, and The Franklin Institute. It also stops at Independence Mall, home of the Liberty Bell Center. In the City of Brotherly Love, explore the city on the Southeastern Pennsylvania transportation Authority (SEPtA) transit system, which includes regional rail trains, rapid transit subways and elevated trains, trolleys, trolley buses, and motorbuses. The 30th Street Station is a major hub for various modes of transport and connects directly to Philadelphia International Airport by train. Pittsburgh’s Free Fare t-Zone lets you travel for free between six light rail stations in its downtown area. These stations are an easy walk from top attractions such as the Monongahela Incline, Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Science Center, and the city’s major sports venues. In State College, hop on the Centre Area transportation Authority (CAtA) Campus Service bus route (it’s not just for students!) for free loops and links around Pennsylvania State University and to downtown shopping and dining. Also available for both students and the general public, the Amtran connects PennState Altoona to downtown Altoona and numerous shopping and entertainment areas. To see more of the state, board Amtrak’s 195-mile Keystone Service between Harrisburg and Philadelphia, cutting through the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, or hop on the 444-mile Pennsylvanian line, which travels from Pittsburgh to New York City. FUN TRANSIT Prefer to pedal? Lancaster’s bike-share program, Bike it Lancaster, gives you the freedom to go wherever you want or to take one of its self-guided tours on public art, architecture, historic homes, and historic churches. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh offers POGOH bike-share rentals, as well as Spin e-scooters for cruising around the city. Or see mountaintop views of the city when you hop on an inclined railway such as the Duquesne incline or Monongahela incline. NON-CAR TOURS For a trip through time, hop on Gettysburg Foundation’s seasonal Double Decker Bus tour, offering 360-degree views of Gettysburg Battlefield, the site of the Civil War’s bloodiest battle. Or take to two wheels on a guided battlefield tour with Segway tours of Gettysburg. In Lancaster County, explore the Amish countryside in a single- or double-seated scooter with Strasburg Scooter tours. Take a tour of the town of Hershey on the Hershey trolley Works, featuring landmarks, fun facts, and even chocolate samples.
