LOCATED ALONG THE Kanawha River just off I-64, about 12 miles west of Charleston, Nitro was born as a World War I boomtown built by the U.S. Government to manufacture gun powder for the war effort. This patriotic city hosts events throughout the year celebrating the American spirit.
Each year at sunset on Nov. 10, Nitro residents and area veterans’ groups celebrate the end of WWI and the service of all veterans who paid the ultimate price protecting our country. The 13 American flags at the monument located between First Avenue and Bank Street are lowered that evening, then raised again at sunrise on Nov. 11.

Also in November, the Wagging Tails & Nitro Ales chili cookoff and craft beer festival benefits Dog Bless, a local volunteer animal rescue group that has found homes for more than 3,000 dogs. So this event is a true pet-friendly celebration!
Mardi Gras Casino and Resort features live greyhound racing, slots, table games and – new this year – a sportsbook area for betting. Dance the night away to live music at Louie’s and enjoy fine dining at the French Quarter Restaurant. Come for the day or spend the night at the hotel.
