POWWOWS A powwow or “wacipi” (Dakota, Lakota and Nakota for “dance”) is a traditional Native American cultural celebration and social event. See how beating drums, soulful singing and mesmerizing dance combine to create a sense of celebration and community during powwows held throughout the year. You truly have to see it in person to have the full experience. EXPERIENCE LAKOTA CULTURE The Indian Museum of North America® and The Native American Educational and Cultural Center® at Crazy Horse Memorial® feature American Indian art and artifacts from U.S. tribal nations. In the summer, visit with talented artisans, watch dancers perform traditional dances and learn more at the Talking Circle Speaker Series. The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation houses an extensive collection of award-winning paintings, sculptures, and historical and contemporary Lakota art. The center is open year round. Tour the historic campus where Chief Red Cloud is laid to rest with guided Lakota Culture & Art Tours at Red Cloud Indian School. The center hosts the world-renowned Red Cloud Indian Art Show — the largest and longest running Native American art show — annually June through August. The Oglala Lakota College Historical Center depicts the Lakota’s tumultuous history from the early 1800s through the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890 with historical photos and artwork accompanied by a detailed audio recording. The new Oglala Lakota Living History Village, near Badlands National Park, offers a learning adventure on the landscapes, indigenous knowledge and culture of Lakota country. When you learn to see the movement of the land, you’ll learn to understand the movement of the people. PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION Majestic Badlands, rolling grassland and dryland prairie await you on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The tribal headquarters is in the town of Pine Ridge, and the reservation includes the communities of Kyle, Oglala, Manderson, Porcupine, Wanblee and Long Valley. Tour the Pine Ridge Visitor Center, located west of Kyle. Enjoy the wildlife exhibit, browse art displays, watch informative videos and discover traditional and contemporary artwork by Lakota artists.
