Along the Missouri The Native American Scenic Byway is the gateway to a revealing cultural experience. The byway is a journey through the heart of the Sioux Nation allowing visitors appropriate access to the history, tradition, development, and future of the Native people. The Byway not only lets you experience the rolling plains of South Dakota, but gives insight into the ancient culture of the Native American: their traditions, their history, and their way of life. Cultural Attractions 1 SACAGAWEA MONUMENT Sacagawea, also called Bird Woman, was the guide of Lewis and Clark on their journey from 1804 to 1806. She was Shoshone Indian woman from the Big Horn Mountains of Montana who was captured and taken to North Dakota. She married a French fur trader there and together they were hired by Lewis and Clark for their Corps of Discovery expedition. Her courage, endurance, and unerring instinct guided the group over seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Today, she is credited with much of the journey’s success. On September 27, 1929, the Sacagawea monument and bronze dedication plaque was erected near the Sitting Bull monument across from Mobridge overlooking the Missouri River. 2 OSCAR HOWE MURALS Visit the ten, newly-restored life-sized murals by Native Artist Oscar Howe. Painted as a WPA Arts Project in 1942, the murals are located in downtown Mobridge. 3 SEA OF GRASS DISPLAY A timeline of history interpreted by regional artists. Thirty-eight pieces of art, created by 24 different artists are reproduced on 3 by 4 foot canvases and illustrate the history of north central South Dakota. JOHNSON LAKOTA CULTURAL CENTER Collections of historical artifacts from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, including murals, old photographs, bead work and paintings – also includes a gift shop. Located in Eagle Butte. 5 SOUTH DAKOTA CULTURAL HERITAGE CENTER The mission of the museum is to promote an understanding and appreciation of South Dakota’s rich heritage through collections, exhibits and events. Includes the horse culture of the Northern Plains. Located in Pierre. 605-773-3458. 6 THE NARROWS HISTORICAL INTERPRETIVE AREA This area is part of the Lower Brule Sioux’s spectacular homeland. Explore an earth lodge constructed in traditional style by members of the Arikara Tribe. Located a short distance north of Lower Brule. Contact the Lower Brule Tribal Office, 605-473-0561. 7 SPIRIT OF THE CIRCLE MONUMENT Located near Fort Thompson at Big Bend Dam, it honors the more than 1,300 people who died over a three-year period in the 1860s at the Crow Creek Reservation. The victims of malnutrition and exposure had been placed in a location that was completely foreign to their way of life and that produced little of no food. 8 AKTA LAKOTA MUSEUM & CULTRUAL CENTER Akta Lakota means to “Honor the People.” The museum is intended to honor and preserve the rich culture of the Lakota people. Located downtown Chamberlain. 605-234-5472. 10 DIGNITY A 50-foot statue Her outstretched arms invite us into her blanket where we can learn from each other, acknowledge our differences and celebrate our similarities. Located at the Chamberlain I-90 Information Center. 11 STRUCK BY THE REE MONUMENT Treaty Monument of 1858, which was erected to commemorate the efforts of the Yankton Sioux leadership prior to the 1862 Dakota Uprising in Minnesota. Located in Greenwood, south of Marty, along the beautiful Missouri River. 12 TIPI STAYS - LAKOTA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT This area is part of the Experience Lakota culture, including traditional dance, art, and music.
