After Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery traveled up the Missouri River in 1804, the “Mighty Mo” became one of America’s main routes for westward expansion. Today, its four massive reservoirs offer plenty of opportunities for water recreation, and a section of the river in southeastern South Dakota is officially known as the Missouri National Recreational River. Start at local favorites like Lewis and Clark Recreation Area and Randall Creek Recreation Area for excellent fishing and fun on the water, followed by camping under the stars. The Missouri River region also boasts some of North America’s best pheasant hunting in the fall and winter.
