TAKE A TWO-WHEELED JOURNEY. Whether you consider yourself a novice mountain biker or a true gearhead, it’s no secret that Sweetwater County is home to some of the nation’s most sought-after trails. Southwest Wyoming offers the ideal combination of wide-open spaces, abundant public lands and knack for adventure, making it a top destination for endless fun on two wheels. Just don’t be surprised if you encounter as much wildlife as you do other bikers! #1 WILKINS PEAK TRAIL SYSTEM Named the most popular trail system in the state, Wilkins Peak Trail System offers single track trails for riders of every skill level. Fourteen trails and more than 20 miles of varied terrain and features including switchbacks, bridges and drops will challenge even the most advanced riders – it’s what keeps mountain bike enthusiasts coming back again and again. Channel Surfing Trail Skill Level: Beginner | Distance: 1.66 Miles For a trail with beautiful views of the city of Green River and natural bluffs, ride the Channel Surfing trail. The trail follows the Green River and features minimal elevation gain and softer, sandier terrain in some areas due to its proximity to the river. Brent and Mikes Trail Skill Level: Intermediate | Distance: 6 Miles The intermediate rider will not want to miss this adventurous trail featuring bridges, ladders, berms and drops. Alternate routes around each feature make this desert ride accessible to more novice riders as well. Pick Your Poison Trail Skill Level: Expert | Distance: 5 Miles For a fun and challenging trail with obstacles and technical features, advanced riders will want to ride the Pick Your Poison trail, starting at the Brent and Mikes trail. Expect tight switchbacks, steep climbs and many other natural features on this scenic trail. Insider Tip: Trail reports are regularly updated on the Sweetwater Mountain Biking Association’s Facebook page. HOW TO ACCESS IT: From I-80, take exit 91 to continue on E Flaming Gorge Way in Green River. Turn right on Uinta Drive and then left on W Astle Avenue. Continue on to Mountain Fuel Station Road which turns right into E Teton Boulevard. Turn left off of E Teton just north of Jackson Elementary School and cross the river bridge. This road travels to the right where you will see a parking area next to the outdoor archery range. Park here for a longer ride or to access the beginner trails such as Channel Surfing. There is a second parking area and Info Kiosk 0.5 miles farther down the road. This is the trailhead for intermediate and advanced trails, Fast Exit, Draino and Don’t Chute. From here you can ride to the Brent & Mikes trail or drive another 2 miles to the trailhead. #2 MUSTANG LOOP TRAIL Beginning bikers will love the Mustang Loop Trail, the newest bike trail in Sweetwater County. This multi-use path stretches three miles long and is easy to access, located just west of Western Wyoming Community College along Gateway Boulevard. The trail was completed in the fall of 2021 and is open for community use. Hikers, bikers and in wintertime cross-country skiers are welcome. Make sure to plan a return visit, as even more developments are coming, such as teeter-totters, rails and more skill items for mountain bikers. HOW TO ACCESS IT: Take Gateway Blvd to the West Parking Lot of Western Wyoming Community College. Turn right once in the parking lot and look for a trailhead with signage and map. THE BIKE AND TRIKE Start your mountain biking adventure by heading to the one-stop shop for all things biking and cycling. The Bike and Trike is a local shop in Rock Springs that sells bikes, parts, clothing and accessories to get you ready for the trails. This full-service bike shop offers full suspension, fat bike, and e-bike rentals. If you bring your own bike, they offer tune-ups on all makes and models, so you are ready to explore.
