Shopping local is easy in New Orleans since the city is full of unique culture bearers. Here’s a look at some of New Orleans’ most creative artisans.
WICKS NOLA CANDLE COMPANY
Wicks NOLA is a Black- and woman-owned candle maker in New Orleans offering products that give off memorable city smells like beignets, jasmine, and crepe myrtle. Enjoy fun scents like Garden District (floral), The Big Easy (mint), Voodoo Spell (saffron), and more. When you’re traveling in New Orleans, you can book a mobile candle-making class.
PIETY AND DESIRE CHOCOLATE
Enjoy a seductive journey into the flavors of New Orleans at Piety and Desire on Magazine Street. Specializing in bon bons, flavors change seasonally and they also serve ice cream.
JAMBOREE JAMS
It’s more than just a jam shop! Jamboree Jams works with a network of small-scale farmers across the Gulf South to make jams and marmalades using traditional methods and local seasonal fruit. Since everything is local, the flavors pack a punch. Visit their Bywater storefront inside Bar Pomona.
THE GOOD SHOP
Billed as a home to ethically made goods, everything in The Good Shop is local. Browse everything from jewelry and clothing to personal care items and home linens. The shop regularly donates to a variety of social and environmental organizations as well.
ART MARKETS
Art markets are a great way to peruse locally made goods. Arts Market New Orleans is the city’s largest juried fine arts and crafts market, which operates once a month at New Orleans City Park. Other great places to peruse local vendors include festivals and breweries that have regular events.
Gallery Hop
A DAY OUT IN THE MARIGNY AND BYWATER
The Bywater, located right outside the French Quarter, is filled with street art, including murals and lots of unique art shops.
Start with StudioBE, the brainchild of local artist Brandan “BMike” Odums. The visual art housed in this large warehouse depicts the stories of revolutionaries, heroes, and everyday New Orleanians, often featuring the artwork of BMike himself and the youth he works with.
Then head over to Dr. Bob Folk Art for a statement souvenir before taking a stroll along St. Claude Avenue to view more street art. The Bywater is home to some of the most creative murals in the city!
