HERITAGE AND HONORS

At The Heritage Center at Mahpíya Lúta, situated on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, vibrant Lakota art springs to life. Further deepening the region’s indigenous roots, Crazy Horse Memorial® showcases a multitude of American Indian art and artifacts from various UStribes. During the summer, visitors can engage with skilled artisans, observe traditional dances, and expand their knowledge at the Talking Circle Speaker Series.

INDIGENOUS CULTURE

Learn more about Western South Dakota’s indigenous history. The Oglala Lakota College Historical Center offers insight into the Lakota’s poignant past, from life in the early 1800s to the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. An educational journey awaits you at the Oglala Lakota Living History Village near Badlands National Park, where visitors can learn about the past in an immersive experience.

STORY OF THE BISON

Wrap up the journey with a stop at Kevin Costner’s Tatanka: Story of the Bison in Deadwood. This unique experience sheds light on the symbiotic relationship between the Lakota Nation and the North American Plains Bison — a symbol of their shared history and resilience. Learn more about hunting practices at the Vore Buffalo Jump, an archaeological site near Beulah, WY.
