Kayaking in Bayou Teche Kayaks at Fairview-Riverside State Park Some of the South's best kayaking can be found on Louisiana's bayous, lakes and rivers. One of the best places to get your feet wet is the 135-mile Bayou Teche, which became the 17th waterway to join the National Water Trails System in 2015. Put your kayak in along 13 established access points for paddle trips as short as seven miles or as long as the entire length of the bayou. Just outside Marksville, Spring Bayou, which was made navigable in 2007, offers three self-guided tour itineraries, available from the Avoyelles Commission of Tourism. In the heart of New Orleans’ Mid-City neighborhood, Bayou St. John offers the chance to see landmarks like City Park and the New Orleans Museum of Art while paddling. Kayak-iti-Yat and Bayou Paddlesports will be glad to guide you and they also offer kayaks for rent. On the Northshore, Bayou Adventure in Lacombe rents and delivers single, tandem and fishing kayaks for exploring areas like Big Branch Marsh and Fontainebleau State Park. Brave the swamp on a Honey Island Swamp tour guided by New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours, or explore the Manchac wetlands with Wild Louisiana Tours. Tangipahoa River Kayaks in Independence will get you started on a scenic four hour-plus journey that ends at a beautiful beach. In south-central Louisiana, the Bayou Vermilion Paddle Trail includes four launches and travels past restaurants, bridges and parks. A popular leisurely paddle in the northern part of the state is Bayou Dorcheat, which winds its way through the entire length of Webster Parish. Flowing through an area once referred to as "no man's land” in Allen Parish, the Ouiska (aka “Whiskey”) Chitto Creek is popular for both novice and experienced kayakers who want to enjoy a day on the water.
