Located in a scenic ponderosa pine forest, this 1,279-acre park is a peaceful retreat for hiking, birdwatching and viewing colorful wildflowers. Its most spectacular sight, however, lies deep beneath the surface. Jewel Cave boasts more than 220 miles of mapped passageways, as well as illuminated caverns, glittering dogtooth spar crystals, whimsically named formations like cave popcorn and cave bacon, and ceilings dripping with stalactites. Insider tip: Choose from a variety of tour experiences, including Discovery Tours and Historic Lantern Tours, but be sure to reserve ahead—ranger-guided tours are the only way to explore Jewel Cave, and they book up fast.
