Throughout South Dakota, unique terrain and postcard-perfect views set the stage for epic outdoor adventures.

Black Elk Peak

Hiking

The 111-mile (179-km) Centennial Trail beckons novice and experienced hikers alike, with stops at Black Elk Peak and Bear Butte State Park. In the lush forests of Newton Hills State Park, keep your eyes peeled for the more than 200 migrating bird species that pass through each year.

Lake Kampeska

Cycling

The George S. Mickelson Trail spans 109 miles (175 km) from Deadwood to Edgemont along an old railroad bed. Beginner bikers will enjoy the 10-mile (16-km) trail at LaFramboise Island in Pierre.

Pactola Reservoir

Paddling

From the Missouri River to the state’s many lakes — including Pactola Reservoir and Lake Kampeska — opportunities abound for paddlesport enthusiasts.

Climbing

For rock climbers with a penchant for bouldering, the Needles area near Sylvan Lake is the spot. In winter, Spearfish Canyon’s icicle-laden waterfalls offer exhilarating experiences. Palisades State Park, ringed with rare pink Sioux quartzite cliffs, is a go-to for new climbers.

Roy Lake State Park

Fishing

Cast for walleye along the shores of Lake Oahe. Rent a boat at Roy Lake State Park for open-water bass fishing. Or wade into Black Hills streams to try fly-fishing with a local guide.

Black Hills National Forest

Winter Recreation

When the temperatures drop, outdoor adventures heat up in South Dakota. Terry Peak Ski Area and Great Bear Ski Valley possess slopes for all skill levels. Zoom through Black Hills National Forest by snowmobile, and try your hand at ice fishing throughout the Glacial Lakes & Prairies region.

Animal Encounters

South Dakota’s diverse ecosystems and vast protected areas play host to an abundance of wildlife, like brawny bison, chirping prairie dogs and sprinting pronghorns.
