Whether you drive, pedal or walk, take in picture-perfect views as you make your way across these engineering and architectural marvels throughout South Dakota. 1 Near Garretson, stroll across the 1908 pin-connected Pratt truss bridge spanning Split Rock Creek in Palisades State Park to make your way to King and Queen Rock — pink Sioux Quartzite outcroppings that are famous among rock climbers for their vertical cliffs. 2 Just 2 miles north of the Wind Cave National Park Visitor Center outside Hot Springs, the 1929 Beaver Creek Bridge on South Dakota Highway 87 is a concrete and steel deck arch bridge that appears to emerge naturally from the canyon walls. 3 Connecting the towns of Chamberlain and Oacoma over the Missouri River, the Pennsylvania through truss-style Chamberlain Bridge was originally constructed in 1925 and then reconstructed in 1953 using sections of the historic Wheeler Bridge. Today it carries the Interstate 90 business route. 4 Traverse the Big Sioux River at Cherry Rock Park in Sioux Falls using the truss bridge that connects sections of the Sioux Falls Bike Trail, a 29-mile paved trail system that encircles the city and follows the Big Sioux River Greenway. 5 Marvel at the spectacular Black Hills scenery on portions of U.S. Route 16A, known as Iron Mountain Road — part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway — where you’ll wind along hairpin curves, switchbacks and wooden pigtail bridges, a type of bridge that loops over itself to navigate the steep terrain. 6 Between Pierre and Fort Pierre, this 2,200-foot bridge was completed by the Chicago and North Western Railroad in 1907, allowing trains to cross the Missouri River, which played a vital role in the development of the state. 7 This pedestrian bridge across the Big Sioux River provides unparalleled views of the Arc of Dreams, a stainless steel sculpture that soars 85 feet above the river and is the capstone of the Sioux Falls SculptureWalk. 8 Open to bike and foot traffic only, the Meridian Bridge in Yankton is the longest double-decker pedestrian bridge connecting two states (South Dakota and Nebraska). The north end is capped by the Meridian Bridge Plaza, home to a summer music series and sculpture walk. 9 What the bridge at Sioux Falls’ Terrace Park lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty.
