THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD TRIP You may be surprised by all there is to do just beyond the next exit on the 410-mile stretch of I-90 in South Dakota. MITCHELL Mitchell is home to the World’s Only Corn Palace. The civic center is decorated with more than 275,000 colorful ears of corn. Visitors travel from around the nation for this one-of-a-kind exp-EAR-ience. MISSOURI RIVER The Missouri River is a site to be seen. Admire the remarkable Dignity sculpture at Exit 263. Fill up on 5¢ coffee and a savory meal at Al’s Oasis, the biggest watering hole along I-90. MURDO Murdo’s comfortable accommodations and home-style eateries epitomize small-town USA. Find tasty dishes at The Covered Wagon Cafe and delicious buffalo burgers at the Buffalo Restaurant & Bar. Visit the Pioneer Auto Show & Prairie Town for a nostalgic display of more than 275 vintage cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors. Continuing west, you’ll enter Mountain Standard Time. Only 22 miles west of Murdo, explore more than 30 authentically furnished pioneer buildings at South Dakota’s Original 1880 Town. KADOKA Your fi st glimpses of the Badlands appear near Kadoka, exits 150 and 152. Kadoka is home to Badlands Petrified Gardens, an extensive exhibit of fossils, petrified wood and minerals found in the area. Then, enjoy a taste of the Badlands at Badlands Distillery. Visit the tasting room to try the locally handcrafted spirits. BADLANDS REGION Westbound travelers take Exit 131 to tour the Badlands. Two interesting attractions sit at this exit. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Visitor Center is north of I-90. Read more on page 114. Prairie Homestead, south of I-90, is one of few original sod houses remaining in the U.S., made by stacking sod cut from the prairie grass to create walls. Expect to find a plethora of scenic overlooks and photo opportunities. For a birds-eye-view, book an exhilarating aerial tour with Badlands Helicopters. INTERIOR Interior is the oldest Badlands town, located just one mile south of the park. It’s home to Native West Trading Company, premier agate beds for rock hunters and family fun at Hurley Butte Horseback. Seasonal accommodations are found nearby.
