TIPS FOR TRAVELLING & PACKING LIKE A LOCAL At Colorado’s higher altitudes, the air is thinner and the sun is strong. These tips will help you handle the altitude and weather with ease: ► To help your body adjust, take only moderate exercise for a couple of days after you arrive. ► Drink plenty of water and limit dehydrating alcoholic drinks; most locals always have a water bottle on hand to keep them hydrated and healthy. ► Wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen and SPF lip balm daily — even if there’s cloud cover. ►Dressing in easily removable layers can ensure you’re always comfortable — adding or removing them as temperatures change. Our diversity of elevations means temperatures can shift quickly. Here are some basics to bring that will help you stay comfortable: ►Winter: Warm, water-resistant coat or parka, hat, gloves, long underwear, snow pants and water-resistant boots ►Spring/Autumn: T-shirts, rain jacket, fleece jacket, jeans and shorts ►Summer: Light jacket, shorts, jeans, hiking pants, swimsuit and warm clothing for camping and mountain visits ►There are stores for purchasing gear for all seasons in every corner of the state. Locals live by the principles of Leave No Trace, which means we aim to keep our beautiful places looking their best for generations to come. 1 PLAN AHEAD & PREPARE Bring along reusable water bottles or coffee travel mugs to limit waste. 2 KNOW WHERE TO TRAVEL & CAMP Stay on marked trails and campsites to help protect plants and wildlife. 3 DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Keep a trash bag handy to pack out trash, food and pet waste. 4 LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Preserve our museums and historic sites by not touching. • Any of our 750 different species of wildflowers will live forever in a photo. Please do not pick them. • Avoid decorating anything with initials unless it’s yours alone. 5 MINIMIZE IMPACT FROM CAMPFIRES Keep campfires small and manageable to avoid sparking wildfires. • Use existing fire rings, fire pans or campfire alternatives such as stoves and lanterns to keep fires under control. • When putting out a fire, water it until you can handle the embers.
