From Hunt Valley to Towson, the long way around, this 70-mile ribbon of two-lane country roads traces its way through the heart of Maryland’s famed horse country. First, find the Baltimore County Center for Maryland Agriculture and Farm Park—with its barn-style buildings and pleasant hiking trails. Nearby Shawan Downs, a steeplechase course, hosts a series of equestrian events with legendary tailgating experiences. After catching a race, stop in Reisterstown to see the St. John’s Episcopal Church, whose traditions include a Thanksgiving “Blessing of the Hounds.” At Ladew Topiary Gardens, the life-sized scene of horses, riders, hounds, and a fox is one of the most famous of Harvey Ladew’s topiary creations. His circa- 1747 manor house decor reflects his love of everything equestrian. There is also a can’t-miss summer concert series hosted here. From there, a quick drive will get you to the shops in Jacksonville or the Loch Raven Reservoir Park in Phoenix—great for hiking and paddling. Then, in nearby Kingsville, tour the mill, blacksmith shop, and gun factory at the Colonial-era Jerusalem Mill Village.
