Painted Ladies On the corner of Haight and Ashbury streets perches one of the most avidly collected souvenirs of San Francisco: A street sign marking the heart of the neighborhood where 1960s flower power blossomed. These days colorful Victorian houses brighten the hillsides, and the streets are filled with restaurants and boutiques. With the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love being commemorated in 2017, there will be heightened interest in the proving ground for America’s counterculture revolution. HOW TO GET HERE The 5 Fulton, 6 Parnassus, 7 Haight and 33 Stanyan buses, as well as the N-Judah streetcar, will get you to the Haight area. WHAT TO SEE & DO Flamboyant clothing shops, piercing and tattoo parlors and long-loved stores such as Amoeba Music mix with hip restaurants and boutiques along Upper Haight. Downhill on Haight Street, alternative bars, consignment stores and music shops with old vinyl records hold forth. The former Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury is a perennial attraction, as is the former Jefferson Airplane house at 2400 Fulton St. (Note: These are private residences.)
