Colorado is the eighth-largest state in the U.S., measuring 611 km east to west and 450 km north to south. That’s nearly 275,000 sq. km! Luckily, with a strong network of airports, highways, buses, shuttles and trains, travelling to and around the state is a breeze. AIRPORTS Colorado is well connected with the rest of the U.S. and major international destinations. DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT is the nation’s sixth busiest airport and situated in the middle of the country, a great jumping-off point for visiting other areas with nonstop service from more than 190 domestic and international destinations, including London (Gatwick and Heathrow), Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Winnepeg. Access to mountain resorts and other destinations is easy with shuttle services and buses, and the airport can be reached from downtown Denver via the new Train to the Plane — RTD’s A Line commuter rail. TRAVEL BY TRAIN In addition to historic and scenic railroads (see page 31), Colorado offers modern and convenient train travel options. Amtrak’s California Zephyr line makes the trip from Chicago to Emeryville, California. On its way, it makes a stop in Denver and passes through Fort Morgan, Fraser, Granby, Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction. The Southwest Chief goes from Chicago to Los Angeles, with Colorado stops in Lamar, La Junta and Trinidad. The wildly popular Winter Park Express ski train ferries skiers and snowboarders from Denver’s Union Station right to the base area of Winter Park Resort, January through March. TRAVEL BY BUS & LIGHT RAIL Several options exist for travel between Colorado’s cities. RTD, Denver’s public transportation network, is easy and inexpensive, and you can get pretty much anywhere in Denver and the surrounding area by light rail or bus. Although not required, drivers are advised to get an international driving permit before the trip. For road conditions, visit cotrip.org (or call 511 when in Colorado). Ride-sharing apps Uber and Lyft are popular throughout the state, and several cities, including Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Fort Collins, Golden, Avon, Aspen, Buena Vista and Aurora, feature popular bike-sharing options for getting to and fro.
