Hungry? South Dakota’s culinary scene abounds with an array of eclectic eateries, each with its own unique story. From creative, chef-driven concepts to traditional, Western-style cafés, you never know what you’ll find when you sit down at one of our local establishments. Taste your way through a few of our favorites below. CRAFT CHOPHOUSE & LOUNGE, BROOKINGS Blackened salmon Oscar. Deconstructed chicken cordon bleu. Turkey caprese. These are the delectable, artful and innovative Italian-American dishes you can expect at Craft. Revered for their farm-to-table flavors, Craft knows local farmers and purveyors by name, sourcing the highest quality fruits, veggies and other ingredients. DAILY CLEAN FOOD & DRINK, SIOUX FALLS Even before appearing on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Driveins and Dives,” Daily Clean Food & Drink was making waves in South Dakota’s culinary scene. This casual eatery focuses on healthy yet flavorful meals crafted with local organic produce for nearly every dietary need, like their Food Network-famous Jeb’s No Bull Burger, a vegan-friendly veggie burger with a spicy kick. STAGE STOP CAFE, NORTHERN BLACK HILLS Located inside historic Cheyenne Crossing, Stage Stop Cafe is known for downhome cooking and hospitality. While they have several legendary dishes, it’s the Indian tacos, a Western staple, that get people talking. Stage Stop tops their Indian fry bread — the official bread of South Dakota — with a homemade meat-and-bean sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, sour cream and more…yum! MISTER SMITH’S BAKERY & CAFE, VERMILLION While serving as a police captain in Connecticut, Larry Smith began baking during his free time. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Larry and his wife packed their bags, moved to Vermillion and opened a cafe. Known for having the “best bread in the world” by O, The Oprah Magazine, Larry’s legacy lives on through his original peasant loaf bread and decadent sandwiches served daily at Mister Smith’s. Recipe LEFSE Life sure is sweet in the 605, especially when making one of our favorite desserts — lefse. Our take on the traditional Norwegian flatbread is similar to a crêpe and is the perfect edition to any gathering, no matter the time of year. Make this local specialty for your next event with friends and family! Ingredients 4 cups mashed potatoes (no lumps) 2 tablespoons salt 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup cream 2 cups flour Mix potatoes, salt, cream and butter, and chill overnight. Place potato mixture in the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment. Add the flour and mix well. Generously flour the rolling pin and countertop or a board. Roll out the dough into tortilla shapes. Cook on a griddle set at 375°–400°F until hot, then turn down to 350°F. Once slightly browned and cooked through, remove from the griddle. While still warm, spread with butter, sprinkle with white or brown sugar, roll up or fold, and serve immediately.
