FIVE THINGS WITH CHEFS STUART BRIOZA & NICOLE KRASINSKI OF STATE BIRD PROVISIONS Chef proprietors and Bay Area natives Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski combined the hardiness and adaptability of California’s state bird, the California quail, and the act of providing delicious food and drink to create their Fillmore District restaurant, State Bird Provisions (1529 Fillmore St.) and its family-style sister restaurant, The Progress (1525 Fillmore St.). Like San Francisco itself, their cuisine is eclectic and constantly evolving in nature. Here, Stuart and Nicole share five recommendations for savoring your time in the city. FAVORITE ONLY-IN-SAN FRANCISCO DELICACY: From April through October, we have an abundant local anchovy season. There’s one fisherman who catches anchovies in the bay and then sells them right at Pier 43. These tasty little fish come directly to restaurants from the water and are served on menus all over the city, including both State Bird Provisions and The Progress. FAVORITE LOCAL SPOT FOR A GREAT COCKTAIL: Although it’s not a bar, we love the simple margaritas and extensive Mezcal list at Nopalito (306 Broderick St. and 1224 Ninth Ave.). They also make a great Michelada (a spicy mix of beer, tomato juice, lime and jalapeño), which is the perfect mid-day drink on a day off, especially after a bike ride through Golden Gate Park. FAVORITE ANNUAL EVENT IN SAN FRANCISCO: La Cocina Street Food Festival remains one of the best places to sample and support the diverse culinary talents the Bay Area has to offer. They celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2019, and each year they amp it up and add new ways to experience the event. WHERE YOU’D HAVE YOUR LAST MEAL IN SAN FRANCISCO: Michelle Polzine’s 20th Century Café (198 Gough St.) is a gem in the city. We dream about her pierogi, strudel and perfect fruit galettes. Her everything bagels with smoked salmon are our favorite to-go snack for airplane travel, or frankly, any road trip in the car. WHAT EVERY VISITOR SHOULD DO AT LEAST ONCE: Visit Lands End. The sweeping views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge are not to be missed and the rocky beach hike feels like a quintessential San Francisco pilgrimage. We do it at least once a month and then grab cinnamon toast and espresso at Trouble Coffee (4033 Judah St.) post-hike.
