With rich, luscious land, Sonoma County is known for producing an abundance of fruits, vegetables and herbs year-round. Among the rolling hills and vineyards, you’ll find many family-owned farms that have lived in our small part of the world for decades. And, in the fall and winter, you’ll see many fishermen out scouring the sea for Dungeness crabs, a Sonoma County specialty. These farmers and fishermen often partner with the county and local restaurants to bring their bountiful harvests to your table, both at-home and when dining out. Whether caught out at sea or grown on the farm, below are some ways you can savor these flavors during your vacation to Sonoma County. CHEESE Western Sonoma County is known for distinctive, hand-crafted cheeses. Along the California Cheese Trail, you’ll find local farms and creameries that make goat, cow, sheep and even water buffalo cheese. During October at McClelland’s Dairy in Petaluma, visitors can wander through seven acres of pumpkins and choose their own right from the vine. The dairy farm also offers educational tours and has plenty of cheese for purchase. For goat cheese connoisseurs, stop by Bohemian Creamery in Sebastopol where their herd of Alpine goats roam the Mayacama Mountains in Sebastopol. This creamery produces several flavorful and unique cheeses. GRAVENSTEIN APPLES Gravenstein Apples were planted widely in Sonoma County in the mid-1800s. Delicious and versatile, they’re perfect for a light snack or to make into apple sauce, pies or other baked goods, depending on their degree of ripeness. In Sebastopol, there are several local farms that offer u-pick apple experiences. While there, consider lodging at one of the area’s hotels to get the full fall experience. DUNGENESS CRAB Plucked straight from the Pacific Ocean, fresh Dungeness crab is a point of pride for locals. Owned by Tony and Carol Anello, Spud Point Crab Company opened in July 2004. Located right across the street from Spud Point Marina on Bodega Bay, all the crab and salmon served at the restaurant are caught by Tony and his son. Whether you buy it straight off the dock, catch it yourself or dine at a local eatery, this savory seafood dish is the ultimate Sonoma County delicacy you don’t want to miss out on. *Please check with farms directly before visiting for their most current offerings.
