Here are ideas for how to spend time when you’re in town, no matter the ages of your group.
PRESCHOOLERS
Let your toddlers express their artistic flair at the Morean Arts Center’s free weekend series. On Saturdays, head to the Morean to make a themed art project in a child-friendly studio at four sessions between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Morean Center for Clay hosts two sessions at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. for families who want to put their clay-crafting skills to the test. Munchkin Town in Clearwater is designed specifically for children under 5 years old. The vibrant indoor play space is stocked with educational toys, cushioned play mats and even a little slide. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL-AGE KIDS
Parents will appreciate the retro neon vibes of the Astro Skate Family Fun Center, which has locations in Pinellas Park and Tarpon Springs. Roller skating is the thing to do here, and whether you’re on regular quads or inline skates, all ages are welcome. It’s best for the elementary set, though — those who have just enough coordination to skate on their own.
If the weather is nice, you can’t beat the view and the vibes at Clearwater’s Coachman Park, home to a sun-tinged playground ideal for kids over the age of 5. There’s a pirate theme, two huge climbing structures, a sandpit and more. Done playing? Take a stroll along the waterfront and bask in the salty sea air.
MULTIGENERATIONAL GROUPS
Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is so Florida: With lush walking trails and tons of wildlife unique to the Sunshine State, it’s a great place to take the family for a couple hours. The serene preserve spans 400 acres in south St. Pete, offering a glimpse at diverse habitats for animals such as gopher tortoises, alligators and marsh rabbits. Admission is less than $5 per person for all ages. There is also a playground for the kiddos and multiple picnic shelters. If your feet get tired, consider booking a private tram tour. One tram is $35, and can seat up to seven people for a 60- to 90-minute tour. Note: Boyd Hill is closed Mondays.
Take the family to Catapult Adventure Park, an all-ages spot on 66th Street in St. Pete that offers ways for kids young and old to jump, slide, climb and bounce. There's also a snack bar, arcade games and an area just for toddlers. The best part? It's all indoors, so you can come here rain or shine.
