Whether you’re a seasoned eco-friendly traveler or just being introduced to the concept of sustainable tourism, ensure you’re doing your part to keep the environmental quality of Alaska—and all destinations—as green as possible. One way to do this is to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about Alaska Native ways of life. Whether you’re in one of the larger, more urban cities, or a small rural village, take the time to get to know the locals, support their businesses, and find out as much as you can about their communities, history, climate, and cultural activities offered. The better prepared you are, the more you will be able to soak in all of your surroundings and enjoy yourself through a more economical, socially responsible, and sustainable lens.

Of Alaska’s 365 million acres, only about 1 million are private. That’s a lot of free, open land to explore. Which is why LNT Principles were developed as a means to preserve Alaska’s natural environment for generations to come. By following these guidelines, you can help keep Alaska a prime destination for sustainable tourism.
Plan ahead and familiarize yourself with city or state regulations
Travel and camp on durable surfaces
Properly dispose of waste and recycle when possible
Leave what you find so that others experience the joy and wonder that you have
Minimize campfires/build fires in places where they will not leave a scar
Respect the wildlife and maintain appropriate viewing distances
Bring your own water bottle and/or coffee thermos to refill if possible
Reduce shower time, especially in remote areas where water sources may be limited
Do not litter—when exploring the great outdoors of Alaska, remember if you pack it in, you must pack it out
Be considerate of other people
