SEE & DO

A legendary 1960s music emporium that continues to rock with big-time performances, The Fillmore is a must-visit venue. The neighborhood is also rich with jazz notes, which you can soak up at clubs like the Boom Boom Room or at the Fillmore Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz fest on the West Coast. Make your way to a few stops along the African American Freedom Trail, including the Fillmore’s four historic churches, before taking in galleries, exhibitions and live performances at the African American Art & Culture Complex. Nearby on Fillmore Street, you’ll find eclectic and oh-so-San Francisco boutiques and vintage shops along with big-name fashions, all clustered conveniently together.

EAT & DRINK

Go casual with some delicious California-style pies at Pizzeria Delfina, or splurge on dinner at the acclaimed SPQR, State Bird Provisions or The Progress. You also can’t miss with Ethiopian fare like spicy-lentil sambussa and doro wat chicken stew at Sheba Piano Lounge. Finish with a nightcap at Harry’s Bar or The Snug; the Fancy Schmancy Highball makes for a memorable end to the day.

WHERE TO STAY

The family-owned Grove Inn is close to all the Fillmore’s favorite spots and has tales to tell, having been built during the gold rush in 1865 (and updated a few times since then). Or there’s Hotel Kabuki in nearby Japantown, which has a serene garden to relax in.
