Peaceful expanses, unique historical sites, one-of-a-kind birding and other rustic experiences make for a relaxing day in Burlington and Wray. Morning Here you’ll find rural living, eastern-plains heritage and many of the farms that bring food to your table. Begin in Wray, where peculiar greater prairie chickens dance in search of mates each spring. The ritual is such a spectacle that viewing tours are offered in March and April. The Wray Museum features an extensive Paleo-Indian exhibit that displays one of the largest and oldest Stone Age bison kill sites. Afternoon Drive south to Burlington’s Old Town Museum to find 21 clapboard buildings filled with authentic artifacts from the early 1900s. Visit Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends, when things are in full swing: Check out the new exhibit showcasing the culture of Native Americans who lived on the plains; then catch a high-noon gunfight and enjoy Wild West dinner theater. At Pioneer Park, stroll an outdoor exhibit that highlights the plants and animals of the region. Evening Grab a quarter and head over to the Kit Carson County Fairgrounds to ride a National Historic Landmark. Out of the nearly 4,000 wooden carousels carved in America between 1885 and the 1930s, the fully restored 1905 Kit Carson County Carousel is one of just a handful still spinning. Those visiting the last week in July can take in the century-plus-old Kit Carson County Fair and Rodeo. Or book a weekend of prairie pampering in nearby Stratton, where The Claremont Inn & Winery will spoil you just the right amount.
