- Discover a Unique Culinary Combo: Crabs, Rockfish and Fried Chicken
You could spend a lifetime visiting local restaurants sampling Maryland’s famous crabcake, but there are other delicacies to try, too. The all-you-can- eat crab feast at the Red Roost near Salisbury also includes fried chicken and corn-on-the-cob. Chesapeake City’s Bayard House is casually upscale with seating on the banks of the C&D Canal. Save room for the tempting, multi-layered Smith Island Cake, Maryland’s official state dessert.
- Uncork or Pull a Pint
The Shore’s wineries offer styles for every occasion— from casual table wines to highly rated varietals. Layton’s Chance, Crow Vineyard and Costa Ventosa wineries are good stops. Faulkner Branch produces cider from apples grown on their own orchard. Vodka fans can visit the home of Sloop Betty vodka in Stevensville. Take a private tour and see how craft brews and spirits are made at Evolution Craft Brewing and Public House, one of the first craft breweries in Salisbury, and Lyon Distilling Co. in St. Michaels.

Feast your way through the newest foodie town on the Shore, where talented chefs transform locally sourced ingredients into delicious dishes. Jimmy and Sook’s is known for “Grandma’s” recipes where fresh-caught seafood is the star. The High Spot is a cozy gastropub featuring fan favorites such as Fried Green Tomatoes & Crab and an out-of-this-world Duck Fat Burger. RaR Brewing brews its own beers and also features selections from other Maryland breweries. The annual Seafood Feast-I-Val dockside crabfeast in August proves the perfect pairing for crabs is a picture-perfect bayside sunset.

- Share the Beach with “Sea” Horses
Assateague Island State Park and National Seashore are home to the legendary wild horses. Sunbathe on the beach, enjoy swimming, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding, or follow the trails that lace this barrier island. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels brings to life the rich traditions of Chesapeake residents who earn their living from the bay. The Delmarva Discovery Center in Pocomoke is an interactive museum celebrating the natural and social history of the Eastern Shore. On Tilghman Island, haul lines aboard the Rebecca Ruark; built in 1886, she’s the oldest boat in Maryland’s hardworking fleet of traditional sailing skipjacks.
- See Masterful Art at the Ward Museum
The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art in Salisbury showcases exquisitely carved decoys and avian-themed paintings that blur the lines of hunters craft and master’s art. Every spring, The World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition attracts international artists to Ocean City. In November, the Waterfowl Festival in Easton is a town-wide weekend festival of waterfowl art.
- Footsteps of Harriet Tubman
The visitor center at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park tells the story of the remarkable woman who risked her life to lead enslaved people to safety and freedom. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Scenic Byway takes you through the landscape to discover stories of Tubman and other freedom seekers and those who helped them along the way.
- Take in the Theater and Fine Arts
Chestertown, Church Hill and Oxford boast strong theaters with productions of Broadway quality. Easton’s Art Deco-era Avalon Theater welcomes national and regional artists. The month-long National Music Festival in Chestertown showcases international artists. For fine art, Easton, Snow Hill and the Ocean City Art League’s galleries feature works from regional artists.

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is home to dozens of species of waterfowl and wildlife. The large population of Bald Eagles soaring over the marsh thrills visitors. Take Wildlife Drive and stop at observation decks and bird blinds. Walk a trail through stately loblolly pines at the water’s edge. Rent a kayak or bike from Blackwater Paddle and Pedal to explore on your own or take a guided tour.

Nearly every town on the Shore has a compliment of mysterious happenings, apparitions and long-deceased residents who still hang around. Chesapeake Ghost Walks offers guided tours through eleven towns where spirits linger.
- Mix it Up in Somerset
The “Trail Mix” map showcases non-motorized adventures in the southernmost county on the Shore. Well-marked routes for bikers, paddlers and hikers invite exploration and relaxation at your own pace on the water or along quiet byways and through friendly villages. Bring your own equipment or rent from several outfitters.

Every Wednesday, Dixon’s Furniture Auction in Crumpton sells antiques, from barn doors to vintage vending machines and record collections to heritage quilts.

Summer starts in May with Ocean City’s Sunfest— four days of music, arts & crafts, kids’ activities and food. At Crisfield’s National Hard Crab Derby on Labor Day weekend, live crabs scramble across the course. The Hot Air Balloon Festival in August near Easton draws dozens of colorful participants. Steam traction engines from a bygone era of agriculture fire up again at shows in Easton and Federalsburg.

- Discover “The Coolest Small Town in America”
That’s Berlin, according to Budget Travel. Its 19th-century main street is dominated by the elegant Atlantic Hotel, unique shops, wine bars and restaurants. Burley Oak Brewing Co. is a must for beer fans. Annual events include the Bathtub Races, Jazz, Peach and Celtic festivals, and a month-long Dickens’ Christmas.
- Relax in Laid- Back Rock Hall
The folks in Rock Hall used to love their solitude so much they reversed the harbor’s channel markers to keep the day boaters away, but now the locals have opened their harbor and their hearts to travelers, which is good luck for us. Rock Hall’s Key West attitude comes through at traditional spots like the legendary Waterman’s Crab House and Durding’s Store, and funky fun spots like The Mainstay make this tiny port on the Chesapeake a treat. Come for the Pirates and Wenches Weekend in August for a swashbuckling good time.

International travel website Culture Trip assigned this accolade to the idyllic village that straddles the C&D Canal. The historic district is perfect for walking, browsing, and watching ocean-going vessels ply the inland waterway. For a longer trek, the 17-mile-long, multi-use, all-access Ben Cardin Canal Trail runs the entire length of the canal.
- Get a Taste of Chesapeake Living in St. Michaels
With the exception of chasing away the British during the War of 1812, St. Michaels has always welcomed visitors. An important seaport during the days of sail, the town still maintains its historic nautical identity. You can spend an entire day at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum with its 18 acres of waterfront displays and demonstrations. But be sure to plan plenty of time to wander through the distinctive shops and enjoy its restaurants along Talbot Street.
- Enjoy a Day (or Weekend) in Oxford
The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry is the most scenic approach to the colonial-era town of Oxford. It crosses the gentle Tred Avon River and is a good choice when traveling from St. Michaels or Easton. Dine or spend the night at the Robert Morris Inn or enjoy a picnic at the bayside town park. Mystery Loves Company Bookstore overflows with tomes from that genre, but also has a good selection of regional titles.
- Plan a Classic American Vacation to Ocean City
Maryland’s family vacation destination for decades, O.C. beckons visitors with its broad, sandy beaches and cooling ocean breezes. It’s not summer without Dolle’s Salt Water Taffy, Thrasher’s Fries, Bull on the Beach pit beef, Fisher’s Popcorn and a ride on Trimper’s Carousel. The north end of town, with its high-rise condos and hotels on the beach, offers a quiet escape, while the Boardwalk and Inlet bustle with arcades, rides, water activities and people-watching.

SPOTLIGHT
Celebrate America’s Folkways
Salisbury begins a three-year term as host city for the annual National Folk Festival in September 2018. The three-day, free, open-air celebration embraces the heritage and traditions of all Americans. It’s the nation’s longest running traditional arts event, attracting about 150,000 people each year.
The foundation of the festival is music, with a breath of talent that is broad in both styles and geography. Expect to hear blues, New Orleans jazz, gospel, salsa and bluegrass.
Past festivals have welcomed Japanese drummers, a Jewish Klezmer band and reggae artists.
There’s a lot more than music, though. In all, more than 300 musicians, dancers, storytellers and craft artisans will perform on six stages, conduct workshops and give demonstrations. A dedicated children’s area will provide age-appropriate activities. Regional and ethnic food will tempt taste buds, and craft brews and regional wines will be available.
