WATER ADVENTURES

Chesapeake Bay, St. Michaels

Chesapeake Shores, Ocean Beaches and Endless Possibilities

Explore natural expanses of staggering beauty and welcoming small towns with unparalleled style. For an unforgettable getaway, escape to the Eastern Shore.

Get Back to Nature

More than 90 species of mammals and 400 species of birds call Maryland home, many of them on the Eastern Shore. See (but don’t touch) wild horses; watch as pelicans and cormorants dive into the waves for dinner; and enjoy beach access and hiking paths at Assateague State Park—Maryland’s only oceanfront state park. Heron, osprey and eagles soar over the tidal wetlands of the spectacular Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, dubbed one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy. For flora rather than fauna, take a stroll through Adkins Arboretum’s five miles of trails shaded by American holly, pawpaws and black gum. Migrating tundra swans return each autumn to Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, an ideal place to fish and hike year-round.

Eastern Shore 1

By the Bay

At the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, tour the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, observe a working boatyard, or attend one of many special events, including the Antique & Classic Boat Festival & the Arts. For an authentic Maryland boating experience, check out the historic log canoe races hosted by the Miles River Yacht Club. Races take place throughout the summer, but the largest is the Log Canoe Governor’s Cup Weekend in late July. Vintage skipjacks, Maryland’s historic wooden oyster boats, race each year at the Skipjack Festival.

Eat & Drink

1. Drink in the View at The Narrows

Located right on the Kent Narrows, a channel connecting the Chester River to the Chesapeake Bay and known by locals as a good crabbing spot, this casual restaurant is as famous for the water views and sunsets as it is its crab cakes.

2. Indulge in Traditional Eastern Shore Eats

Try steamed crabs and fresh oysters on the deck at Linton’s in Crisfield, or take a ferry to Smith Island, home of Maryland’s official state dessert, the Smith Island Cake.

See & Do

3. Make a Bird Lover Happy

The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art showcases decoys and other avian-themed art and serves as home to the Annual Chesapeake Wildfowl Expo. For more waterfowl-centered art, visit the annual Waterfowl Festival held in Easton in early November.

4. Play Ball

Catch the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Class-A Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, in action at the Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, also home to the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame. Die-hard enthusiasts will enjoy the game played by teams of the Mid- Atlantic Vintage Baseball League, including the Elkton Eclipse, who play by 19th-century rules, dress in period-appropriate woolen uniforms, and play at the Terrapin Station Winery.

5. Bid on a Treasure at Dixon’s Furniture Auction

Every Wednesday, Dixon’s Furniture Auction in Crumpton sells antiques, from barn doors to vintage vending machines and record collections to heritage quilts.

6. Follow the Underground Railroad to History

After it opens in March, start at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center before heading out to trace this American hero’s legendary life along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Scenic Byway.

7. Enjoy Midway Magic at the Wicomico County Fair

This summer mainstay features tractor pulls, car shows, live entertainment and chicken fried in a five-foot-wide skillet.

8. Take the Route Less Traveled

See the shore from the deck of the Oxford- Bellevue Ferry (which crosses the Tred Avon River) or the Whitehaven and Upper ferries (which cross the Wicomico).

9. Get Crafty at the Fiber Arts Center

Try a quilting class, learn textile history, and purchase materials for DIY projects at this Eastern Shore gem.

10. Brush Up on Basket Weaving

Edward and Samuel Day began creating handmade white oak baskets in North East in 1876. The baskets produced today at the Day Basket Factory are handwoven in the same manner used by original craftsmen.

11. Fun on the Boardwalk

No trip to Ocean City is complete without a visit to Trimpers, or a round of miniature golf or a watery slide at Jolly Roger.

12. Charter a Boat for a Fishing Adventure

The Chesapeake Bay is an angler’s dream. Charter a boat from Crisfield, home of the National Hard Crab Derby, for a great day on the bay.

Stay

13. Book a Room with a View

There’s always a room with a (water) view on the Eastern Shore. One top spot in St. Michaels, the Inn at Perry Cabin by Belmond, offers the height of luxury and first-class dining.

Bucktown Store on The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad, Cambridge

14. Pamper Yourself at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina

Home of the River Marsh Golf Club, one of the top ten courses in the northeast according to Condé Nast, this beautiful resort along the banks of the Choptank River has it all. Use the resort as a home base for exploring the nearby Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. You don’t even have to leave the Hyatt’s 400 luxurious waterfront acres—with tennis courts, delicious dining, watersports and allinclusive packages available, it’s paradise on the shore.

15. Dine and Delight at Oxford’s Robert Morris, America’s Oldest Inn

Built in 1710, when Maryland was still a British colony, the Robert Morris Inn is older than the nation around it. The waterfront grounds are perfect for enjoying a summer’s breeze, and the charming rooms with their roaring fires make ideal respites from winter’s chill. Take the ferry for a day in St. Michaels, then dine at the inn and experience the culinary wonders of celebrity chef Mark Salter.

16. Get Away to the Atlantic Hotel in Berlin

This Victorian retreat is an absolute gem in the middle of downtown Berlin. Wander the charming, walkable streets and let the locals show you why Berlin was named “Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel. Make sure to hit the hotel restaurant, Drummer’s Café, with its modern takes on classic shore cooking.

Surf and Sun in Ocean City

Surf and Sun in Ocean City

BY MARY ZAJAC

When Marylanders tell you they’re going to the beach, they mean Ocean City. The 10-mile-long barrier island resort offers plenty of activities—or the chance to do nothing at all. Play pinball, ride the Ferris wheel, take a bike ride, or shop on the historic boardwalk. Rock out to your favorite bands at annual events like Springfest and Sunfest. Cast a reel or catch a wave, parasail over the ocean, fly a kite, eat steamed crabs, walk miles of shoreline, spot a school of dolphins, or hit the sand early to see the sun rise over the ocean.
