West Sixth Street may be more upscale than its historic cousin, but it’s no snob. Its retro discos, elegant wine bars and offbeat dives are high in style and hospitality.

Everything is a shade of pink at Taquero Mucho, right down to the homemade tortillas. Garbo’s on Lamar dishes up buttery New England lobster rolls and frozen lemonade. The steaks and grilled quail at Ranch 616 are a taste of the Southwest. Sample raw fare at sunny Clark’s Oyster Bar, from tender oysters to tuna carpaccio.

Dim sum dazzles at Qi Austin Modern Asian Kitchen with creamy egg tarts and lobster dumplings. Modern TenTen dishes up fresh sushi and Japanese-style grilled meats. Take a culinary tour across China at Wu Chow, which highlights eight traditional cooking styles. At Lin Asian Bar + Dim Sum, feast on rich pork soup dumplings and Akaushi beef.

Seasonal California-Texas- Mediterranean eats at Pecan Square Cafe shine in a glowing dining room. Brick-lined deli Walton’s Fancy & Staple delights with heaping sandwiches and chewy macarons. At moody Mediterranean steakhouse Aris, steaks are USDA Prime and butchered in-house.

NIGHTLIFE

Star Bar welcomes all for sports viewing parties or people watching on dual patios. Spot Johnny Cash memorabilia and sip a Mean Marg at quirky dive Mean Eyed Cat. Laidback Rustic Tap pours local beers and spirits in countrified digs with nightly live music.

Upscale all-day diner Better Half Coffee & Cocktails whips up coffee and nuanced cocktails. Next door, Hold Out Brewing offers lagers, IPAs and ciders in a restored Quonset hut.

Asian-meets-Southern at Bar Peached, with botanical-forward cocktails and banh mitacos. A night at dark dive Dirty Bill’s can be cozy or chaotic — but it’s always fun. Get lost in a moody corner at intimate underground lounge Devil May Care. Or party the West Texas way at Wiggle Room, a retro disco with frequent DJs.

Rosie's Wine Bar HOWARDS AND ROSIE'S

Tiny Howards Bar and Club has a big personality, plus stellar smash burgers and Chicago hot dogs. Around back, sip natural wines on the European-style patio at Rosie’s Wine Bar.
