FUN FACTS
Before he became the notorious, gun-slinging outlaw Butch Cassidy, Robert Leroy Parker briefly lived and worked around Rock Springs. There, he reportedly gained the nickname “Butch” while working at a local butcher shop.
Sharpshooting legend Calamity Jane also spent some time around Rock Springs, and rumor has it she had a dugout on what is now M Street.
In 1869 and 1871, American explorer Major John Wesley Powell used Green River’s Expedition Island as the launch point for his journeys to map out the Green and Colorado rivers and document the Grand Canyon.
