HISTORIC DEADWOOD The small town attracted outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers along with gold seekers. Legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Poker Alice, created their legacies here. Eventually, they became permanent residents at Mount Moriah Cemetery, an eternal reminder of the town’s remarkable place in American history. Over the years, Deadwood inched closer to becoming a ghost town. Legalizing gambling and big name, annual events like the Days of ’76 Parade and Rodeo, held every July since 1924, keep history alive and revitalize the community. Today, the community is one of only a handful in America designated as a National Historic Landmark. THINGS TO DO Those who want to learn more about Deadwood’s history should plan a visit to the Adams Museum, showcasing artifacts from the town’s notorious past. The Adams House is a fascinating tour of a preserved mayor’s home as it stood in 1936, including original personal furnishings. Or stroll through the Days of ‘76 Museum, highlighting the town’s annual rodeo celebration, along with western exhibits and the region’s largest horse-drawn vehicle collection. Original Deadwood Tours offers a citywide tour, which conveniently loads on Historic Main Street. Rambunctious driver-guides will tell you the whole Deadwood saga as you wind through side streets and climb to Mount Moriah Cemetery. You can also learn more about Deadwood at the interpretive Welcome Center and even hitch a ride on the historic horse-drawn Deadwood Stagecoach. A mile north of town, journey through Kevin Costner’s Tatanka: Story of the Bison, a Native American Interpretive Center. View a larger-than-life bronze sculpture featuring 14 bison pursued by three Indian horseback riders — frozen in motion in a beautiful, high-prairie setting. There are plenty of dining options in Deadwood, from saloons to buffets to upscale dining such as Flyt Steakhouse and Deadwood Legends Steakhouse. Stop by and try one of their specialty dishes. MAIN STREET DEADWOOD A vein of entertainment and bountiful opportunites runs along Main Street Deadwood. Casinos, great hotels, and fabulous dining options are plentiful when you walk in the footsteps of legends. During the summer months, reenactors perform free daily shows and shootouts at various locations on Main Street. In the evening, watch reenactors perform the Trial of Jack McCall, a stage play based on the real trial of Wild Bill’s murderer. And don’t miss the new Outlaw Square and its Wednesday Night Summer Concert Series, beginning in May. This live concert series is free and full of great entertainment all summer long. GAMING The same promise of riches that lured prospectors and gamblers to Deadwood more than a century ago continues to draw visitors today.
