Experience the rugged beauty of the American West, where buffalo still thunder across the open plains. Custer State Park’s 71,000 acres invite you to hike, mountain bike, rock climb, ride horseback and fish in unspoiled mountain lakes. Stay in any of the park lodges or pitch a tent in one of nine campgrounds— and be sure to check out the exhibits at the Visitor Center and Bison Center. See the park in its full glory during the annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival, when crews drive in the herd of more than 1,300 bison.

Wildlife Loop State Scenic Byway
Winding 18 miles through Custer State Park, the Wildlife Loop offers prime views of South Dakota’s most iconic wildlife, including bison, bighorn sheep, elk, prairie dogs and wild burros. Critters are most active—and easiest to spot—in the early morning or evening. Breathtaking views await at the top of Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower on the northwestern side of the loop.

EAT & DRINK
Whether you’re gearing up or winding down, the town of Custer has delicious options just outside the park’s dramatic peaks and prairies. Grab breakfast sandwiches served on flaky croissants at the European-inspired Feel Good Café. Enjoy intimate fine dining at Skogen Kitchen or go for pizzas and flatbreads paired with craft beer at Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company and The “Pounding” Fathers Restaurant. For dessert, indulge in an ultra-thick milkshake or a slice of just-baked pie at the Purple Pie Place.
