MAGNIFICENT HOME WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM Custer State Park There’s nothing ordinary about Custer State Park. As you enter this spectacular reserve, it takes only minutes for the enchantment to begin to beguile your senses—it’s nature at its most bewitching. Custer State Park is defined by towering pines sheltering the roadways, gentle flowing creeks with their clear, sun-sparkled waters, and massive granite outcroppings around every corner. Taking center stage in this transcendent landscape is one of the most powerful icons of the American West – the bison – shouldering his way into view, the unchallenged master of this wild world. WILDLIFE LOOP ROAD The bison, or buffalo, is the official logo of Custer State Park and its main claim to fame as a world-class wildlife refuge. Nearly 1,300 buffalo, the second-largest public herd in the US, roam free in this 71,000-acre park. For an event unlike any other in the world, make plans to attend the annual Buffalo Roundup & Arts Festival, taking place September 28 - 30, 2017. Feel the thunder and watch as cowboys and cowgirls roundup and drive the herd. Not only is the roundup a spectacular sight to see, it is also a critical management tool in maintaining a strong and healthy herd. The Wildlife Loop Road winds through the prime buffalo range in the southeastern part of the park. The huge bulls know they have the right of way, and you’ll be thrilled with the up-close views of these shaggy beasts as they boldly amble across the road, bringing traffic to a halt. The cows are a little more watchful. After all, they have a rambunctious spring crop of calves to keep in line. It all makes for one-of-a-kind photos, but stay safe. The herds are usually calm and peaceful, but don’t let that fool you. These are wild creatures, and anything from flies to itchy coats to bold photographers can put them in a bad mood. Remember, you don’t scare these big boys one bit, and when aroused, they are agile and quick. Use caution and enjoy watching them from a distance. On most days, there’s another interesting critter waiting for you along the road – the park’s burros. These burros originated from the herd that once hauled visitors to the top of Black Elk Peak. When that ride was discontinued years ago, the burros were released into the park and have become a popular visitor attraction. These panhandlers stop traffic along the Wildlife Loop Road and are the most photographed animals in the park. Custer State Park As you meander along the parkways, chances are good you’ll come upon scampering prairie dogs, white-tailed deer, handsome pronghorn antelope, snow-white mountain goats and even the reclusive elk. Whether you’re a casual sightseer or a serious nature photographer, the watchable wildlife of Custer State Park put on quite a show. After all, they live in one of the country’s largest state parks, with vast tracts of some of America’s most spectacular landscapes to call home. The park also features scenic drives, fascinating historical sites and exhibits, and unbeatable opportunities for outdoor recreation. HIKE, FISH, CAMP Eleven scenic hiking trails wind through the park, offering more than 50 miles of self-guided trails. This includes opportunities to hike through the endless prairie, explore the forested mountains, or take on a trek to Black Elk Peak — at 7,242 feet, it’s the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. While backpackers enjoy the beauty of the French Creek Natural Area, rock climbers come from all over the world to match their skills on some of the most impressive granite in the Needles. If fishing is your favorite activity, there are four mountain lakes – well stocked with trout, crappies and perch – Center Lake, Legion Lake, Sylvan Lake and Stockade Lake. Nearby Bismarck Lake, a part of Black Hills National Forest, is another favorite fishing spot. And it’s hard to find better outdoor camping sites than the nearly 325 sites for tenters and RV vacationers available every night in the park’s eight campgrounds. Scattered throughout the campgrounds are also 50 camper cabins with heating, air conditioning, electricity and a porch. Plus, tucked away in various corners of the park are four full-service resorts. In 2016, a brand new, state-of-the-art Custer State Park Visitor Center was unveiled — located east of the State Game Lodge at the junction of the Wildlife Loop Road and US Hwy 16A. The Center includes unique educational displays, along with a 100-seat theater featuring a new audio visual presentation that will inspire you to explore all that the park has to offer. The park also operates two additional centers: the Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center, along U.S. Hwy. 16A, and the Wildlife Station Visitor Center along the Wildlife Loop Road. Stop by to learn about the park’s naturalist programs, get trail maps, or gather information about family-related activities. MILLIONS OF MEMORIES 71,000 acres of rolling prairies, pine covered mountains and granite spires that seemingly reach toward the sky. Explore four mountain lakes, three fishable streams and an abundance of wildlife including 1,300 head of free roaming buffalo and a band of friendly burros.
