Northeast Nebraska celebrates creativity in historical downtowns and charming small towns. Set on the North Fork of the Elkhorn River, Norfolk showcases local artists on colorful murals sprinkled around town and offers local growers’ goods at the Norfolk Farmers Market. The Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City spotlights artists whose work is rooted in the land. Kids get in on the fun at the Columbus Area Children’s Museum in Columbus.

THE GOLDEN HUSK

SANDHILLS

This region’s creative districts make the most of their homegrown resources. The handcrafted beers at Scratchtown Brewing Company in Ord are brewed with water from the Ogallala aquifer. Find your faves in the taproom or at the Western Nebraska Craft Beer Festival. Next to the brewery, catch a show at The Golden Husk theater. Nuggets of local history are displayed in Valentine’s Centennial Hall Museum and Cherry County Historical Society Museum.

OSHKOSH MURALS

NORTHWEST

Imagination takes a funky twist in the Northwest’s creative districts. In Alliance, check out Carhenge and the vintage cars’ wild paint jobs, which are reimagined every year. Snap a selfie in Chadron Art Alley in the Open Frontier Creative District. Shop for antiques and items by local artisans at A Collective Gathering in Potter. Explore more than a dozen murals and other pieces of public art in Oshkosh, many of them part of the National Barn Quilt Trail.

NORTH PLATTE MURAL VISIT NORTH PLATTE

SOUTHWEST

Creative districts in the Southwest come to life with vibrant festivals, live music scenes and community theaters. In Ogallala, Front Street and Cowboy Museum delivers fun family entertainment with a Wild West focus. It stands to reason that the spirit of the West lives on in North Platte, the place that buffalo hunter-turned-showman “Buffalo Bill” Cody called home. McCook’s Heritage Square boasts architectural treasures, including the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Sutton House.

GRAND ISLAND CREATIVE DISTRICT

SOUTH CENTRAL

Discover artistic spirit and community pride throughout the South Central region’s creative districts. From classical music to bluesy rock and children’s plays, lively productions fill the Red Cloud Opera House, built in Red Cloud in 1885. The Nebraska Prairie Museum in Holdrege transports visitors back in time with its collections of prairie history artifacts. Grand Island is the place to be in summer — its 10-week concert series, Hear Grand Island, draws enthusiastic crowds.

LUX CENTER FOR THE ARTS JOSLYN SCHMUTTE

In the Southeast’s creative districts, locals and visitors come together around poetry readings, art walks and imaginative public art.
