Soak up some of that culture by seeing the San Francisco Opera or San Francisco Ballet perform at the ornate War Memorial Opera House. Across the street at Davies Symphony Hall, the San Francisco Symphony presents beloved programs like “Film with Live Orchestra,” where the musicians play along during screenings of popular movies. For a different tempo, the SFJAZZ Center has something on tap nearly every night of the week. Before the shows, take a walk along Hayes Street — nominated by Time Out as one of the coolest streets in the world — for boutiques, locally designed jewelry and eco-friendly fashion.

What would a cool street be without great places to eat? Expect a twist on French fare at Absinthe Brasserie & Bar, which feels like a romantic Paris outpost. The roasted chicken is rightfully famous at Zuni Café, which combines European recipes with local ingredients. Skip a meal before dining at Espetus Churrascaria, where unending grilled meats are served tableside, or stock up on tacos at Mexican stalwart Papito.

The location can’t be beat at Inn at the Opera, a charmer with large rooms and suites typically unheard of in big cities. Go rock ‘n’ roll at the Phoenix Hotel, a retro motor lodge where the pool is made for a party and local art adds to the creative vibe. A rooftop terrace, wine happy hours and free Asian Art Museum tickets are heralded amenities at BEI San Francisco. Look for other hotels in neighboring Mid-Market or Union Square.
