ROUGHLOCK FALLS Its idyllic setting in a side canyon to Spearfish Canyon makes Roughlock Falls one of the Black Hills’ most beautiful areas and also one the area’s most-photographed spots. It is created by Little Spearfish Creek as it flows down a spectacular chasm and then tumbles off a 50-foot limestone ledge in a series of lacy cascades. BRIDAL VEIL FALLS can easily be seen from the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. The waterfall takes its name from the shape of the water as it falls over the edge and thinly veils the limestone and other rock layers like delicate Victorian lace. SPEARFISH FALLS was once one of the most popular tourist stops in the northern Black Hills in the 19th century until 1917 when its waters were diverted to a nearby hydroelectric plant that helped power operations at Homestake Gold Mine until 2003. Largely forgotten for nearly a hundred years, it is a well hidden beauty.
