At the eastern corridor to the Black Hills is Box Elder, a community-focused and full-service town that is home to Ellsworth Air Force Base. The base’s World War II heritage and economic contributions shape the region. A visit to the South Dakota Air & Space Museum is an opportunity to learn more about the base’s crucial role in defense during the Cold War. Box Elder hosts a variety of community events, like 5Ks, family food truck nights, and the annual Salute to Ellsworth each September, where the community and the Air Force come together to celebrate their bond and show appreciation to those who serve.
