REGIONAL ROAD TRIPS
1 Morganfield: Hidden away in western Kentucky, Moffit Lake Recreational Area is nature’s jewel, offering unspoiled waterfront campsites and cabin rentals, boating, accessible ramps and dock, fishing for catfish, bass and bluegill, picnicking, hiking, and biking in a forested idyll.
2 Corydon: Thirty minutes away, go in search of a blue-winged teal, white-breasted nuthatch or other birds at Sloughs Wildlife Management Area, designated an Important Birding Area by the National Audubon Society. Next stop: Mattingly Farms for u-pick peaches, apples and other farm-fresh produce.
3 Owensboro: Dig into Kentucky-style barbecue cooked low and slow at the iconic hotspots, Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn and Old Hickory Bar-B-Q, that put it on the map. Stretch your legs on the paved and accessible Adkisson Greenbelt Trail in Joe Ford Nature Park, then unplug for a quiet night at Windy Hollow Campground with fishing lakes, a swimming beach, and hiking and biking trails.
4 Beaver Dam: Continue south to the Bill Monroe Homeplace to tour the boyhood home of the Father of Bluegrass Music, with its cherished family heirlooms. Then, tap those toes to live bluegrass music under the stars during Pickin’ on the Porch, held the second Saturday of the month, June through October.
5 Muhlenberg County: Next, drive to Lake Malone State Park for an overnight adventure. Play at the inclusive playground and hike the trails to visit with the Big Twigs, a family of 10- to 17-foot crazy-for-camping sculptures. During September’s annual Dock Trot, set up a lawn chair shoreside or cruise around the lake by boat to multiple live concerts.
6 Madisonville: Set your course next for Mahr Park Arboretum, a peaceful pocket of paradise with paved and soft-wooded trails meandering past ponds and encircled by trees. Paddle Lake Pee Wee or play the championship disc-golf course.
